The Hornbill Festival is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals of Nagaland. The aim is to encourage harmony among the various tribal groups and promote the enchanting and exciting local culture and traditions. It is also an attempt to preserve the rich heritage of the state.

The main events of this epic festival are held at Kisama, the Naga Heritage Village, located around 10 km from capital city Kohima. Traditional Naga huts and Morungs or dormitories that are typical to each of the Naga tribes are built on a small hillock.

All the main tribes and sub-tribes of Nagaland participate actively in the festival. They proudly present the folk dances, songs, and arts of their respective clan to the delight of the audience which includes both local and international tourists.

The Major Highlighting Factors

Some of the highlighting features of the Hornbill Festival include the display of handicrafts, handloom creations and various types of local cuisines. The food stalls at the festival are a major attraction where the local brew of rice beer is a fast-seller.

The highlight of the evening segment of the Hornbill Festival is the thrilling Hornbill National Rock Concert. Music bands from all over the country and from abroad participate in the concert.
